In den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren bestanden Avioniksysteme aus simplen Stand-alone-Systemen. Navigation, Kommunikation, Steuerung und Displays basierten auf analoger Technik.

Ende der sechziger und in den frühen siebziger Jahren, wurde es erforderlich Daten zwischen zahreichen Systemen auszutauschen und dabei die Gesamtanzahl der "Black-Boxes" in einem System zu reduzieren. Mit der aufkommenden Digitaltechnik zogen Computer in die Avionik ein und machten Kommunikationsstandards erforderlich, die Systeme über wenige gemeinsame Leitungen miteinander verbinden konnten. ARINC und MIL-STD Busse eroberten den Markt, da sie es Avioniksystemen erlaubten Daten einfach und sicher untereinander auszutauschen.

Mittlerweile ist mit dem AFDX (ARINC 664) Bus Standard Ethernet in die Avionik vorgedrungen.
